Kurpacha is an original way to get rid of unnecessary outerwear. Try to sew a universal rug-mattress-blanket from old jackets. With your own hands you can create a real masterpiece.
Kurpacha - what is it?
An exotic word came to us from Central Asia. Kurpacha is a quilted mattress, which simultaneously serves as a carpet, and a blanket, and a bed, and an armchair. They sit on it during a meal at a low table, lay it on a trestle bed or floor. We can say that in the east, mattresses replace furniture. They give the body a real relaxation, create comfort and coziness.
It was as if a bright little thing had left the pages of the fairy tale “A Thousand and One Nights”. It has a long history. Kuropachis symbolize the wealth and well-being of the family. Traditionally, they are sewn manually from the khan-atlas or pan-velvet. For the wrong side, use colorful cotton fabric. The filler is cotton, which is quilted, beat off and again quilted already in a fabric cover.
The closest relatives of the kurpacha are Russian quilts. Many families still use them. Thanks to a special technique of performance, they have served faithfully for decades!
Kuropachi in a European way
Variegated fabrics were not to the liking of Europeans, and the very idea of a kurpak seemed to them promising. For several years now, multifunctional leaf-shaped rugs have not gone out of fashion:
The original product can serve as interior decoration, bedside rug, bedspread, blanket. It is convenient to turn it around and take it with you to a picnic. With it, you can protect the children's area: if the baby falls, the sintepon layer will soften the blow.
European "kurpachi", unlike the Central Asian, are easy to wash. Often they are waterproof. If you accidentally stain the product, it will be enough to wipe the dirt with a damp cloth.
How to sew kurpachi from old jackets?
There are several ways to implement the idea. First you need to determine the size and shape of the product, as well as the desired color.
From the materials you will need:
- scissors;
- old jackets (the more the better);
- needle with threads in fabric color;
- braid, fringing tape or just a long flap of fabric for processing edges;
- cotton or other fabric for sewing a cover for kurchati (optional).
Method number 1 - for quilted jackets and down jackets
If the outerwear is already quilted with stripes or another pattern, you can sew kurpachi in an hour and a half:
- “Cut” the jacket: open the sleeves, back, hood, remove the zipper, decorative elements and fasteners.
- Trim the rounded parts of the parts so that you get squares and rectangles.
- Sew them together, matching colors.
- You need to make two canvases of the same size and shape.
- Attach the parts to each other inside out, wrap the edging tape around the edge and sew.
For sewing “kurpachi” in the form of a leaflet, you can use the template:
The easiest way to sew such a rug is from two rectangular parts. To do this, you need to fasten them together a little diagonally, forming a "vein". Further it will remain to give the rug the shape of a sheet and process the edge.
Method number 2 - for coats and quilted jackets
Kuropachi can be made from any outerwear with insulation. The only thing, if the material is not quilted, you have to sweat and quilt the product yourself.
- Disassemble the down jacket for details.
- Sew into the fabric.
- Draw a fine grid (pattern) or glue the strips of tape:
- Quilting according to the intended pattern.
If the jackets are multi-colored, you can sew a quilt using the patchwork technique from them. Bright flaps of geometric shape look especially fun and stylish.
Method number 3 - with a cover
Many people prefer bedding made from natural fabrics. In this case, the old jacket can be used as a soft filler.
We do everything according to the classical scheme:
- We unzip the jacket, cut out the squares and sew the overlap.
- From the fabric we like we sew a cover.
- Insert the mattress from the jacket.
- Quilting.
How hygienic are the old jackets hygienic and safe?
100% Jacket fillers are mostly hypoallergenic. Mites do not start in them, bacteria do not live. They are not saturated with skin secretions, as they are worn over clothing. You can easily wash such products. And if the outer fabric is frayed, you can take only the “stuffing”, and throw out the rest.
What else can be done from a down jacket?
Vest, soft bedding in sledges, clutch, bag, stool seat, bean bag chair, pet bench, car seat cover ...
Old jackets take up a lot of space. It is not surprising that many tend to get rid of them quickly. Maybe you should not rush like that. If you are at least a little friends with a needle and thread, a down jacket can even turn into furniture. The kurpacha will replace you with a carpet, a blanket, a mattress, a bed, an armchair, will become a real decoration for a nursery and a hookah! Or maybe it will inspire the construction of a trestle bed - an oriental arbor?
