Do you think that buying a dishwasher will completely save you from the hassle of washing dishes? First you need to find out what you can not wash in the dishwasher. Not all kitchen utensils can be sent to the PMM - this threatens to damage the dishes themselves and go to the details of the machine. We will figure out what kind of dishes you can, and which ones you can’t put in the dishwasher.
Considering that today it is made not from two or three standard materials, but from a whole set, it is not always easy to understand what should be cleaned in manual mode. On the shelves you can find glass, porcelain, earthenware, crystal, cast iron, ceramic, wood, nickel silver, plastic, silver, stainless and other products.
We advise you to carefully read the tips in order to know what is not subject to automatic processing. Separately, examine the list of what you can wash in a dishwasher.
Aluminum - away from PMM!
This is the first and main unwanted guest on the shelves of the dishwasher. The metal easily comes into contact with substances, even water, under certain conditions. In contact with chemical components dissolved in hot water, baking trays, pots, mugs and other aluminum products are coated with a dark gray coating. If you inadvertently sent aluminum utensils to the PMM, be careful: easily soiled, can leave marks on your hands and other utensils.
By mistake, hundreds of people ruined:
- details from meat grinders, juicers;
- garlic crush;
- spoons and forks;
- geyser coffee makers;
- buckets;
- baking sheets;
- pots and pans, etc.
There are several ways to remove plaque that has appeared after washing - read about them in a separate article.
Important! If you care about health, replace aluminum cookware with more harmless options.
Some aluminum utensils darken during the first wash, but this can also happen during the second or third cycle. Therefore, if your friends tell you: “Yes, I’ve already washed aluminum three times in a dishwasher, everything’s fine!” - don’t take a word.
What happens in the PMM bunker
Why is one plate easy to clean in automatic mode, and the second cannot be sent to the machine? Manufacturers have created special conditions in the washing chamber that affect the materials. Denote these factors:
- high temperature (water or air when drying);
- potent chemicals in detergents;
- prolonged stay in water, etc.
Given that even porcelain can respond differently to the effects of high temperature water, it will not be easy to remember what factors other materials react to. So just put both aluminum and the materials listed below in your stop list.
Wooden and plastic dishes
Everything that is made of wood, many always strive to wash it in the typewriter. Of course, then follows the panic and the questions “What to do?”. It's simple: a tree with prolonged contact with water tends to swell. The wood is completely saturated with moisture, its size is growing, and the product changes its original appearance. After drying, it is compressed, and the connection between the fibers at this moment irrevocably collapses.
What do we get in the end? Full or partial, but significant deformation of the subject, cracks and unsightly appearance. It’s enough to lie down in a water rolling pin for half an hour to swell - and this is even faster in a cold, hot process. In PMM, the washing cycle can be extended up to 4 hours, plus chemistry - the device cannot stand it.
Usually housewives put in a machine such dishes from a tree:
- wooden boards;
- pistils;
- shoulder blades;
- bowls or plates;
- hot coasters and more.
Plastic utensils are less demanding than wooden, but a successful washing can only be subject to a number of conditions. If the plastic is not heat-resistant type, the dishwasher will definitely have a “Do not wash!” Icon, otherwise you will find a sign allowing washing in the dishwasher.
100% forbidden to wash in PMM:
- disposable tableware;
- plates without permission icons;
- toys that emit a sharp chemical smell;
- plastic utensils with glued parts or decor;
- plastic containers, unmarked bottles that allow automatic washing.
What is even better to wash by hand
Aluminum, plastic and wood are not the only materials that are not placed on the shelves of the dishwasher. Do not wash in a dishwasher:
- Porcelain cups and saucers. It is better to wash all porcelain dishes with your hands, but thin porcelain is especially sensitive to automatic washing and turbo drying.
- Cast iron utensils. For one sink with cast-iron grates, pots, cauldrons and other utensils nothing will happen. But over time (2-3 wash) you will notice a change for the worse. Cast iron takes corrosion - the appearance will be completely damaged, and the unique qualities are lost.
- Crystal. Rinse your favorite crystal table set under the tap so that you do not encounter “glass corrosion” (microcracks and scratches) and that glasses and salad bowls do not burst from temperature surges. If you still want to take a chance, then there are some tips on how to maximize the safety of crystal in PMM.
- Vacuum containers. Containers, mugs, pans and thermoses flush out air, creating a vacuum inside. With intensive washing, a beneficial property may be impaired, and your favorite thermo mug or lunch box will not maintain the temperature of the food.
Important! If there is a mark on the thermos or thermomug that allows washing in the PMM, wash it. If the badge is not found - better with your hands.
- Sharp knives. There is an unwritten rule: so that the knife does not get dull, they wash it quickly and under slightly warm water. If you leave the knife in hot water for a few minutes, sharpening will become worse, and constant washing of the knives at high temperatures will make the knives sharpen several times a week.
Important! Do not stack other sharp objects in the PMM (knives from a blender, graters, barbecue forks) - they will quickly become "dull".
- Copper utensils, silver and cupronickel. Like aluminum, these metals do not tolerate contact with powders and hot water. Copper darkens and loses its appeal.
Also, we do not recommend sending such objects to containers of the machine:
- silicone molds can withstand temperature, but washing can affect their properties (according to reviews, baking will not stick well);
- enameled dishes (enamel is cracked);
- clay pots (cracked);
- thin ceramic dishes;
- plates from an electric grill (teflon);
- the shelves of the refrigerator (metal, painted - the coating comes off easily);
- aquarium (may stick or crack);
- hood elements - filter and parts made of aluminum.
Answers on questions
Having collected all the readers' questions related to the topic, we answered in detail the most interesting and relevant ones.
Question: Can Teflon pans Tefal be washed in a dishwasher?
Answer: The non-stick properties of Teflon pans can be violated after 2-3 washes in the PMM. Studying the housewives forums, we came to the conclusion that some calmly wash such dishes in the typewriter for years, and the second complain that they have already "killed" several pans, despite the permit sign. The point is the quality of the pan and the aggressiveness of detergents.
Question: Can I wash the electric kettle?
Answer: You can, manually. To prevent damage to the appliance, wash the kettle with warm water under the tap.
Question: Can you wash the Barrier or Aquaphor jug in a typewriter?
Answer: It is possible. Choose a temperature cycle to wash the jug up to 40 degrees.
Question: I do not want to wash the double boiler with my hands. Will it go bad?
Answer: Depends on the material of the double boiler. The aluminum container will deteriorate, and the plastic double boiler has no contraindications.
Question: I was going to sterilize the jars in the dishwasher. Never tried. What mode to set?
Answer: In the absence of the function of “sterilizing cans” (in some Bosch models), select a temperature regime of at least 60 degrees.
